Cylindrical shafts up to 700 mm in diameter can be ground and polished onsite irrespective of their application, like compressor shaft, pump shaft, rotor shaft, alternator shaft, turbine, tail shaft, etc. In the case of the auxiliary engine and main engine, it is observed that due to the main journal or connecting rod bearing failure, the journal diameter gets damaged, having the following broad discrepancies:
- Development of excessive taper and ovality beyond the permissible limit on the crankpin and main journal diameter of the crankshaft.
- Bearing material getting embedded on the crankpin or main journal surface.
- Deep scoring marks or dents on the diameter and fillet radius.
- Variation in hardness due to generation of heat.
- Development of cracks.
In case of the above defects developed in the crankpin or main journal of the crankshaft, it is necessary to undertake the grinding and polishing of the crankshaft. In olden days, it was necessary to remove the crankshaft/cylindrical shaft from the casing, pack it and send it to the designated workshop for the repairs. This used to work out time-consuming and expensive.
